Quando si parla di tessuti in inglese, bisogna fare attenzione al contesto d'uso. Il sostantivo tissue viene comunemente usato per indicare i fazzoletti di carta e significa “tessuto” solo in senso biologico: muscle tissue, tessuto muscolare. Quando si parla di stoffe e tessuti nell'ambito dell'arredamento, si possono usare indifferentemente i sostantivi fabric e material: When buying a sofa, pay attention to its fabric, quando comprate un divano, fate attenzione al tessuto. Infine, quando si tratta di abbigliamento il sostantivo più usato è material: This material is itchy, questo tessuto pizzica.
